NEWS AND NOTES     September 25, 2005

Ü Worshipers are reminded that when we complete the Communion hymn, the next consecutive hymns are sung as long as God’s people are still communing.

Ü Today we welcome Rev. Chad Trouten as our guest pastor.  He and Pastor are exchanging pulpits.  Rev. Trouten is pastor of Bethany Lutheran Church in Ft. Wayne.  Pastor Brege is preaching at Bethany in response to the members there studying different preaching techniques.  Many of our members here at Preble will recognize Pastor Trouten, because he did his Field Work here 11 (?) years ago.

Ü In Adult Bible Class, Pastor Trouten will continue our study of I Timothy.  All adults of the congregation (including 8th graders) are encouraged to join in this class held 9:15-10am, between the two worship services.

Ü The Wyneken 8th grade will be available after the second service with chicken and pork chops.  There should be extra for those who were not able to purchase presale tickets.  All proceeds go to their Washington D. C. History trip in May, 2006.

Ü Ladies, please don’t forget the SRD Workshop today at St. John, Bingen beginning at 3pm.  A light supper will be served.  Bring your Bibles along with a carload of ladies from your congregation.  It is important!  Canned items are needed for the Ingathering.  These items will be donated to seminary families through the Concordia Theological Seminary Food Bank, Ft. Wayne.

Ü Tomorrow evening we will be our second Life Light Bible Study.  We are studying the book of Isaiah.  If you forgot to contact us about attending or didn’t make it to last Monday’s first session, come anyway.  We can get a book to you next time we meet.  Even if you do not complete any of the work sheets, this Bible class is for you!  You can grow in your faith simply from the weekly discussions.  It will last 9 weeks with Pastor Brege and Tim Ehlerding teaching the class.

Ü Since the day of “Saint Michael and All Angels” is this Thursday, we have moved the Wyneken Chapel Service to that day.  September 29 is frequently called “Michaelmas,” the day when we consider the work of God’s holy angels.  It was celebrated as a major Christian holiday for many centuries.  The church still recognizes it today, but generally less emphasis is placed upon it.

Ü Our quarterly Voters’ meeting is next Sunday at 1:30pm.  Elders and Church Council will meet this Tuesday at 6:30pm and 7:30pm.  We especially encourage the men of the congregation who are 21 and older to take up their responsibility and lead their families and the congregation through involvement in the Voters’ Assembly.

Ü Acolytes for the month of October are 8am Karl Melcher and 10:15am Brian Korte.  If you are unable to attend on a particular Sunday please check your schedule and find a replacement.

Ü The family of Alverna Reinking wishes to invite the congregation to an Open House to celebrate her 80th birthday.  It will be from 1-4pm at the Preble Firemen’s Park.

Ü The Confessional Lutheran Education Foundation has specifically identified those pastors and teachers in our LC-MS congregations and schools who were deeply affected by hurricane Katrina.  Rev. John Ferhmann, president of CLEF, will get 100% of donated money to these needy church workers.  Give such money to Pastor Brege who would direct it to Rev. Fehrmann.  According to Rev. Kurtis Schultz, Southern District President of the LC-MS, at least 70 of the 140 congregations in the district have been affected.  Historic St. Paul’s in New Orleans had its steeple blown off and into the school; Prince of Peace, in New Orleans East, was flooded to the roof; the church in Biloxi survived but the pastor’s home was destroyed; Lutheran high school teachers have been dismissed and told to go to their families in the Midwest or elsewhere as school will not meet for the foreseeable future.  Our Sunday School/Adult Bible Class contributions are going to this charity.

Ü The Indiana District, International Lutheran Laymen’s League will meet in convention on this Saturday at Advent Lutheran church in Zionsville, Indiana just north of Indy.  Mr. Greg Lewis will be the speaker; he is the new executive director of LLL.  For more information or registration call Roger Vandrey (317-876-7526) or Richard Hoff (317-467-0407).

Ü If anyone has any extra produce, get it to Pastor Brege by Tuesday morning and he will bring it to the seminary Food Co-op.  This food then goes to the seminary students and their families.

Ü Names of Thrivent members are needed for the Adams County Thrivent Chapter Board ballot by Oct. 2nd.  Board members are allowed to serve no more than 4 years.  Congregations and Chapters will no longer receive their Thrivent money allowances if we do not have new members for the Board.  Please contact your congregational representative to have your name placed on the ballot.  Thank you.

Ü Immanuel Lutheran Church will be hosting their 18th Annual Hog Roast at the Union Township Hall today from 11am-1pm.  There will also be a craft show and bake sale.  The price of tickets at the door they will be $6.50 and $4.00.  Carry outs are available.

Ü The Ladies Aid is sponsoring a trip to Shipshewana on October 12 for a dinner and show.  If you have questions or to make a reservation contact Ruth Peters (547-4306) or Sue Buuck (639-3834).  We need 47 ladies to fill the bus so invite friends!

Ü Concordia Seminary Guild along with the LWML of Indiana, Ohio and Michigan will co-sponsor Donation Day at the Seminary on Tuesday, Oct. 18th.  Registration begins at 9am along with tours of the Campus.  10am is the Chapel Service, followed by Coffee with the students.  At 11am we will gather in Sihler Auditorium for a welcome and a Style Show by Sem families modeling clothing from the co-op. Lunch will be at 11:45am in Luther Dining Hall.  At 1pm we will gather again in Sihler Auditorium to hear Dr. Lawrence Rast of the CTS faculty.  He will be giving an entertaining history of famous Lutherans associated with the Ft. Wayne area and the Seminary. Please bring your donations for the Food and Clothing Co-ops and join us for this very enjoyable day at the Seminary.  Please send reservations and $10.00 (forms located on the table in the Narthex) to Concordia Theological Seminary, 6600 N. Clinton St., Ft. Wayne, IN. 46825 by Oct. 4th.

Ü Zion Lutheran School, Decatur invites us to their Second Annual Golf Outing & Hog Roast on Sunday, Oct. 2 at Cross Creek Golf Course and Pavilion from 12-2pm.  Adults (13 & up) are $6.50, children (7-12) are $5.50 and children 6 and under are free.  Carry outs are available.  For those who want to golf, there will be a 9 hole Florida scramble with a 1pm shotgun start.  Cost is $35.00 per person (which includes green fees, cart, prizes and a hog roast dinner).  To sign up for golf (foursome) or reserve your meal, call the church office at 724-7177.  All proceeds go to Zion Lutheran School’s 7th & 8th grade class trip to Washington, D. C.

Ü St. John, Flatrock is having their fall rummage sale on Friday, October 14th from 8am-4pm and Saturday, October 15th, from 8am-noon in the gymnasium.  $2.00 a bag or as much as you want for $5.00 on Saturday morning.

Ü It is time to renew subscriptions for The Lutheran Witness.   If you want to continue to receive this publication DO NOTHING.  If you wish to subscribe, fill out the form located on the table in the Narthex.  If you wish to cancel your subscription sign your name on the cancellation form.  Changes need to be made by October 23rd.  The cost of a subscription is $12.00 and you can use the envelope provided in your contribution box.  Just drop the envelope in the offering plate on Sunday.
